Let Me Tell You About Homestuck!

What is Homestuck?

Okay, if you've stumbled upon my page and don't actually know what Homestuck is, it's basically a webcomic that got really popular in the 2010s. To give you a brief idea of what it involves, it has a lot of bisexual aliens, time travel, casual usage of the R word, lots of media res fan engagement, highly referencial comedy, racist comedy, and a cult following. I'm going to be real, it's not everyone's cup of tea. Not only that, but sometimes the fandom has a bad reputation for various behaviors often associated with the, at the time, majority teenage fanbase.

That said, it's also an incredibly thoughtful piece of art that has been compared to Shakespearian plays. It's incrediby reflective of the time it was created in and I mean that as a positive thing. Personally, I first read Homestuck when I was in high school. I was going through a transitional period and Homestuck was a big part of that. Hell, I made a Tumblr exclusively so I could look up classpect theories. Now it's my primary social media platform and I've made irreplacible friendships through the Homestuck fandom.

Why do you like Homestuck?

The comic is just genuinely funny. Even the objectively worst, most terrible characters have incredibly funny moments. It's easy to get into the syntax and running gag style of humor. There's a lot of gamified mechanics within the comic that I find interesting to talk about. However, the main thing I love about Homestuck is the fandom, the community.

One major thing that I think makes the Homestuck fandom so great is both the massive amount of creativity in it and the collaborative efforts that people go through. Homestuck was created with fans making art and music for it that actually end up in the comic. Even outside of the comic, you can find no lack of fanzines, fanmusic, and other fan projects.

Should I read Homestuck?

I'll be honest, I don't often recommend Homestuck to people. But if what you see on this site interests you at all, I would suggest giving it a chance. There's a lot of cool girls if that's important to you.

All in all, Homestuck is what you make it. If you read Homestuck and want to engage with the fandom, I would suggest seeking out environments that make you comfortable. Figure out what you want in your community. Curate your experience. There's many corners to the Homestuck fandom, I'm sure you'll find a place that suits you. All I ask is that you try and be more uplifting than discouraging.
